On paper, it looks like it’s working

A few years ago, I came into a life sciences company as a fractional CMO. They already had an agency. Blogs were going out. Social posts were going up. Traffic looked great. Really great. One of their blog posts was pulling nearly as much traffic as the homepage. Hundreds of thousands of visits. On paper, you’d look at that and think, well, something’s obviously working.

Except it wasn’t.

The company sold specialized life science equipment, and a huge chunk of that traffic was coming from consumers. The agency had created content loosely related to the science behind what the company did, but aimed it at topics more like “how to be a better you in the new year.” People found it. People clicked it. They just weren’t people who would ever buy anything from the company. When we looked at the waterfall, time on page, bounce behavior, and what visitors did next, it was pretty obvious: all that traffic was doing almost nothing for the business.

I see versions of this all the time.

A company can rank. Traffic can climb. The monthly report can look fantastic.

Meanwhile, revenue stays flat. Sales says the leads are garbage. Marketing points to the traffic chart and says everything is headed in the right direction.

If that sounds familiar, you may have an audience problem hiding inside an SEO success story.

The Content Marketing Institute found that 55% of B2B marketers struggle to create content that prompts people to take a desired action. Based on the companies that bring me in to examine this problem, I’d put the number closer to 60–65%. That’s not a formal study. It’s what I tend to find when we follow traffic through to leads, opportunities, and revenue.

Traffic can be useful. But only when some of the people arriving on your site have a reason to buy, specify, recommend, fund, approve, or use what you sell.

That’s why keyword research for life sciences needs to begin with the customer, the buying group, and the problems they’re trying to solve. Search volume comes later.

Why Keyword Research for Life Sciences Breaks Down

Life sciences marketing sits between several groups that don’t always speak the same language.

Scientists care about accuracy. Regulatory teams care about what can be supported. Sales needs conversations with qualified buyers. Leadership wants pipeline and revenue. An SEO agency may be chasing traffic because that’s what it knows how to measure.

Left on autopilot, a keyword strategy usually drifts toward one of two ends:

  • Highly technical terms that attract students, academics, or researchers

  • Broad, high-volume terms that attract just about everyone

Either approach can generate traffic. Neither guarantees that you’ll reach the people involved in a purchase.

Here’s where the trouble usually starts.

1. Scientific Vocabulary and Buying Language Are Different

A principal investigator, lab manager, procurement director, and VP of Operations may all influence the same purchase. They won’t necessarily describe the problem the same way.

The scientist may search for an assay, technique, protocol, or biological mechanism.

The lab manager may search for workflow reliability, equipment compatibility, maintenance, throughput, or training.

Procurement may search for vendors, specifications, total cost, implementation requirements, service coverage, or compliance documentation.

Senior leadership may search for scalability, operating risk, capacity, or return on investment.

If your keyword strategy only mirrors the scientific literature, you may build an impressive readership without reaching the rest of the buying group.

Good keyword research for life sciences accounts for the vocabulary people use as the problem moves from the bench to a budget.

2. The Sale Has Multiple Stages and Multiple Searchers

Complex life sciences purchases rarely move from a blog visit to a purchase order in one clean little funnel.

A buyer may begin by trying to understand a problem. Later, someone else may compare methods. A technical lead may assess validation requirements. Procurement may look for vendors. Finance may evaluate operating costs. Regulatory or quality may ask for evidence and documentation.

Search behavior changes as the decision develops:

  • Early searches help define the problem.

  • Middle-stage searches compare methods, risks, and requirements.

  • Later searches evaluate products, suppliers, implementation, service, and cost.

If most of your content answers introductory questions, most of your traffic will come from people who are still learning. Some may eventually buy. Plenty won’t.

Your content portfolio needs to follow the whole decision.

3. Credibility and Claims Matter More Here

Life sciences content can affect decisions involving health, safety, research quality, and significant capital investment. Google tells its quality evaluators to look for strong experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness—usually shortened to E-E-A-T—when assessing content where getting the answer wrong could cause harm.

E-E-A-T isn’t a simple ranking score you can add to a dashboard. It’s a useful standard for judging whether your content was created by people who know the subject, shows credible experience, uses reliable sources, and gives the reader a reason to trust it.

You also have claims, regulatory, legal, and scientific review to deal with. The exact restrictions depend on the product, audience, market, and type of content. When teams don’t have a practical review process, one of two things tends to happen: the writing becomes so cautious that it says almost nothing, or marketing publishes claims the company can’t adequately support.

Neither outcome helps the customer.

A Practical Framework for Keyword Research for Life Sciences

Here’s the approach I use when working with leadership, marketing, product, and sales teams.

Step 1: Start With a Commercial Priority

Don’t begin by opening Semrush, Ahrefs, or Keyword Planner.

Begin with the business:

  • Which product line needs more pipeline this year?

  • Which audience are you trying to reach?

  • Where are deals getting stuck?

  • What questions keep coming up during technical evaluation?

  • What objections delay or kill the sale?

  • What needs to change in the customer’s operation before they can buy?

This is where Jobs to Be Done thinking helps. What progress is the customer trying to make? What is making that difficult today? What would have to be true for the customer to choose your solution?

A keyword connected to a real customer problem, buying requirement, or commercial priority is worth investigating. A keyword that simply happens to generate traffic is still waiting to prove itself.

Step 2: Compare Scientific Language With Market Language

You need to understand both.

Scientific and regulatory sources can help establish the accepted language of the field:

  • PubMed indexing terms

  • Medical Subject Headings, or MeSH terms

  • FDA guidance and product classification language

  • Conference programs and proceedings

  • Scientific publications

  • Industry standards

Customer and search sources show how the market discusses the issue:

  • Google Search Console queries

  • Google Keyword Planner

  • Semrush or Ahrefs

  • Sales-call transcripts

  • Customer interviews

  • Support questions

  • Site-search data

  • Competitor pages

  • Industry forums and professional communities

The strongest opportunities often sit between the two. The phrase needs enough scientific precision to be credible and enough connection to an active customer problem to matter commercially.

Step 3: Apply Three Filters to Every Keyword

For each potential keyword, ask:

  1. Is it directly relevant to what we do especially well?

  2. Does it show evidence of a meaningful problem, project, or buying requirement?

  3. Can we realistically earn visibility for it?

That third question matters.

Backlinko’s analysis of approximately four million Google results found that the top organic result received an average click-through rate of 27.6%. The first result received about 10 times as many clicks as the tenth, while only 0.63% of searchers clicked a result on Google’s second page.

A large keyword with formidable competition may look attractive in a spreadsheet. If you have little realistic chance of reaching the first page, it can consume a lot of time and budget before producing anything useful.

Specific phrases are often more revealing.

Compare:

  • “Next-generation sequencing”

  • “Next-generation sequencing validation for oncology biomarker panels”

The first could come from a student, investor, job seeker, journalist, researcher, or buyer.

The second suggests a particular application and an active technical concern. It has less volume, but the audience is far more useful.

Step 4: Map Keywords to the Buying Process

Don’t organize keywords solely by blog category. Map them to the questions people ask as the purchase progresses.

For example:

Problem education

Technical evaluation

Validation and implementation

Search tools tell you what people type. Your customer-facing teams can help explain why they’re typing it.

You need both.

What Leadership Teams Often Misread

Traffic goes up, so leadership assumes SEO is working.

Then the MQL-to-SQL rate stays flat. Sales ignores the inbound leads. Opportunities don’t move. Revenue doesn’t change.

The reporting may still call the program successful because impressions, rankings, and sessions have increased.

Those numbers describe visibility. They don’t tell you whether you’ve become more relevant to the people who buy.

The same problem can work in reverse. A highly technical page may receive relatively little traffic but influence several large opportunities. Judging it by pageviews alone would make it look weak.

Keyword research for life sciences should connect visibility to commercial movement wherever possible. That means looking beyond the top of the funnel.

Where Keyword Strategies Fail

You can usually spot the warning signs:

  • Marketing reports impressions without showing what the traffic did next.

  • Content is accurate but disconnected from search behavior.

  • Regulatory or legal review removes every useful point of differentiation.

  • No one compares the keyword plan with sales objections.

  • Broad disease-state content attracts patients and consumers when the company sells specialized B2B products.

  • Competitor keywords are copied without considering a different market position.

  • Every article targets early-stage education.

  • High-intent product and application pages receive little attention.

  • Rankings are celebrated even when the searcher is clearly the wrong person.

The strategy may look organized. The commercial logic underneath it is missing.

How to Measure Whether It’s Working

Measure what happens after the click.

Depending on your systems and sales cycle, that may include:

  • Organic traffic by product line, application, and audience

  • Conversion rates on high-intent pages

  • Marketing-qualified leads from organic search

  • Sales-accepted leads from organic search

  • Organic-assisted opportunities and revenue

  • Engagement with product, application, validation, and service content

  • Growth in branded and product-specific searches

  • Movement from educational pages to commercial pages

  • Sales use of organic content during active opportunities

  • Customer quality by landing page or search theme

Multi-touch attribution will give you a better view than last-click reporting, especially in a long enterprise sale. CRM data, Search Console, analytics, and sales feedback should be examined together.

If traffic grows while qualified opportunities remain flat, keyword research for life sciences may be weighted too heavily toward broad or early-stage searches.

The Tools That Matter

No single tool will hand you the strategy.

  • PubMed and MeSH help validate scientific terminology.

  • FDA sources help establish regulatory and product language.

  • Google Keyword Planner provides directional search-volume data.

  • Semrush and Ahrefs show ranking difficulty, competitor visibility, and related terms.

  • Google Search Console shows the queries already bringing people to your site.

  • Google Trends can reveal changes in interest over time.

  • CRM and call-recording tools show what buyers ask during actual opportunities.

The tools provide inputs. Someone still needs to decide which customers matter, which problems the company can credibly own, and which content could help move a decision.

Apparently, the software hasn’t eliminated judgment just yet.

Try This With Your Team

Pick one priority product.

Then:

  1. List the five questions or objections that appear most often during the sale.

  2. Pull the 20 non-branded keywords currently driving the most organic traffic.

  3. Identify the likely audience and intent behind each term.

  4. Mark which keywords connect directly to one of the sales questions.

  5. Check what visitors from those pages do next.

  6. Identify three specific, later-stage searches connected to validation, compliance, implementation, service, risk, or return on investment.

If fewer than half of your top keywords connect to a customer problem or buying requirement, you’ve probably found part of the disconnect.

That gives you a better starting point for keyword research for life sciences than another export of 5,000 vaguely related phrases.
